Popular culture has made mainstream that which was once folklore. The Mummy, The Wolfman, Dracula, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, or more recently thanks in part to the trilogy of movies: the Mummy. The problem with all of these other costumes though is that they are all more elaborate and more expensive to rent than our old friend, Dracula.

For the ladies, if they are looking for something vampire related, the obvious choice is going to have to be Vampirella or a similar character. The style is hot and sexy and can add a lot of spice to an evening if you are willing to put on such a provocative costume.

If you’re not into the supernatural, or you just want to stand out from the Halloween crowd, why not think about a superhero costume? In the last few years there have been many exciting new superhero based movies (Iron Man or The Watchmen movies spring immediately to mind) that offer enough diversity that there is sure to be something that will appeal to you. Not taken with the modern superhero? Then why not try one of the classics like Spiderman, Superman, or Batman? Heroes not your thing, then try the Joker, or the Green Goblin on for size.

Every now and then, a real world event will drive the sales of costumes. Such spikes in trends help the wearer make a political statement while they enjoy their Halloween night. They are usually not Halloween themed but can still be fun for the wearer. Think President Nixon back during the Watergate affair. That particular incident drove sales of Nixon masks through the roof and you can still see the influence he has in sales of masks today. He has been joined by masks of Jimmy Carter, Bush 1 & 2, and of course President Clinton.

If you’re not into making a political statement, then the final frontier might be more your style. Think Star Trek or Star Wars, Alien, or even consider taking on the persona of one of your favorite Anime characters.

The list of possibilities for what to wear on Halloween is pretty much limited only by your imagination and their availability at your local costume store. So, remember two things – get out there and find your costume before everybody else does and, perhaps the most important thing to remember, have fun while your doing it.
